Walk Smart: A Children’s Pedestrian Safety Education

25-29 January 2016 – – Safe Kids Thailand and University student volunteers conducted the “Walk Smart: A Children’s Pedestrian Safety Educationfor 3,049 students (grade 1-6) in 90 classes, 10 primary schools in Bangkok. The purpose of the “Walk Smart” program was to provide knowledge and skills about pedestrian safety to The focus of the education was to teach how to walk and cross safely in difficult situations: when there is no walkway, on a riverside, in low-light areas, at a railway, in traffic congested areas, and a road with more than two traffic lanes. Safe Kids Thailand also developed a knowledge survey that includes images for each answer to help children understand. Teachers responded that this extra activity could be applied to real life situations and could not be found in the textbook.

Organized a Walk Rally- Safe Child Pedestrians

22 January 2016 – – Safe Kids Thailand, FedEx, Wat Liab Ratbamrung School, and Faculty of Medicine Srinakharinwirot University organized a Walk Rally- Safe Child Pedestrians for 124 students grade 4-6 of Wat Liab Ratbamrung School in Bangkok. During session, SKT together with FedEx volunteers, teachers, and Medical student volunteers demonstrated how to walk and cross the road in difficult situation through fun 3 station games – – Safe Walk, Safe Cross, and Road Signs. Safety knowledge among them increased from 75% to 93%. This activity received the positive feedback from students and also from Medical student and FedEx, found this type of activity engaging and fun as they had a chance to interact with the students.

PHOTOVOICE is selected to be a good model of children participation in road safety promotion

14-15 December 2015 – – PHOTOVOICE is selected to be a good model of children participation in road safety promotion (pedestrian safety) which has received more attention from the audience, presented by Jumpeewanidaporn School team to the representatives from the Ministry of Education in the 12th Thailand Road Safety Seminar at BITEC. The Photovoice has become a scheme of road safety prototype campaign in school. The Ministry of Education has piloted this campaign to boost child pedestrian safety. This campaign has been aligned in school extracurriculum activities in responding to the current Education Reform Policy on “Cut in Class Hours and More Time in Extra Curriculum Activities”.

The opening of the first Safe School Zone in Thailand

14 November 2015 – – Safe Kids Thailand, FedEx, Nan Municipality, Nan Hospital, and FedEx celebrated the opening of the first Safe School Zone in Thailand at Jumpeewanidaporn School in Nan Province with 150 participation of students, teachers, parents, community and municipal leaders, police, hospital, and also 13 local media attended. Mr. Surapol Teinsoot, Mayor of Nan Municipality and Mr. David Carden, Managing Director, FedEx Express Thailand and Indochina, had speech at the opening ceremony. All guests visited the completed 13 environment modifications.

13 October 2015 – – Safe Kids Thailand and CSIP conducted the Walk This Way for Child Pedestrian Safety Training for more than 50 Pediatric, nurse, public health and health promotion staff at the Pre-Congress Workshop National Training Program on Child Injury Prevention for Health Professionals that organized by the Association of Pediatricians of Thailand and WHO at the Century Hotel, Bangkok.

Safe School Zones Project (2-year project)

The School Zone project was initiated by Safe Kids Worldwide due to many children frequently exposed to vehicles and the risks vehicles pose to children around schools. This initiative, therefore, focus on pedestrian safety in the area surrounding elementary schools, which will be known as the school zone. The National Center for Safe Routes to School describes the ideal school zone as one that “starts at the front door and encompasses the campus and as many blocks as possible that surround the school and have a high concentration of school-generated traffic”.
