PHOTOVOICE and Safe-Walking Zones Training ( 28-29 November 2017 )

Safe Kids Thailand, under the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Center (CSIP) supported by FedEx and Safe Kids Worldwide and collaboration with the Office of Nan Primary Education Area Zone 1 and 2 organized a PHOTOVOICE and Safe-Walking Zones Training on November 28-29, 2017 at the conference room of Nan Primary Education Office. The attendants included school management and teachers from 39 primary schools in Nan province. The objective was to introduce process of PHOTOVOICE activity and able to apply in schools.

This workshop was referred to the ‘Safe School Zone’ project at the Jumpeewanidaporn School (Tessaban Baan Pumin) in Nan province. On August 9-10, 2017 the ‘Safe School Zone’ project was introduced to other 100 schools for replicating safety process in their own school. The main objective of Safe School Zone focus on improving school environment and school infrastructure related to pedestrians from the front door, covering all the routes in every building, around schools, and traffic routes surrounding schools. The project success came from well cooperation of all partner networks. On the visit day, Jumpeewanidaporn School and safety team conveyed the success of the Safe School Zone to all attendants. It was the participation of the students through PHOTOVOICE activities. PHOTOVOICE helps to communicate with public by revealing real condition of society that affects young students’ travel to school. Students have opportunity in taking photos their travel route and presenting how risk it is to the public and relevant agencies. PHOTOVOICE leads into better change and pedestrian safety to young students. As a result, 39 school attendants were motivated and signed up for PHOTOVOICE scholarships. This was the background of today PHOTOVOICE workshop.

In the training workshop, teacher attendants learned about 7 steps of PHOTOVOICE activity, consisting of no. 1) knowledge about pedestrian safety, no. 2) learning technique in taking risk area photos, no. 3) taking photo, no. 4) photo selection and small group discussion, no. 5) total discussion, no. 6) PHOTOVOICE Exhibition, and no. 7) risk improvement from PHOTOVOICE. Scholarship fund of 5,000 baht and PHOTOVOICE activity manual were given to school attendants. After the completion of all PHOTOVOICE activity in every school, these will be presented altogether in PHOTOVOICE: Show & Share, which will be presented in May 2018 tentatively.
